Many new carbon materials have been introduced in the past 30 years beyond the previously mentioned materials. Carbon fiber reinforced carbon compound materials (the following C/C composites) are one type of those. Conventional carbon is also a strong material, however, even though it has strength, it has limitations; it often breaks if dropped or impacted. C/C composite has approximately 3-4 times the flexural strength of conventional carbon material and even if dropped, there is virtually no impact that can break it. It has been developed for use in airplane and spacecraft parts because it is a heat resistant material with super strength. It is also being used for hot press mold parts, heaters (metallurgy trays), heat resistant bolts, nuts, etc. Manufacturing methods of the 3 main classifications of C/C composites are shown below.
C/C Composite Manufacturing Method:
As the manufacturing methods are summarized by classification, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is produced through various molding methods; it is fired at between 1,000-2,300℃ in a vacuum and the phenol plastic becomes carbonized. When that happens, the phenol plastic item covered with carbon fiber becomes carbonized and it takes on the state of the carbon that surrounds it. Then, the elements inside of the phenol plastic except carbon, (hydrogen, oxygen, etc.) are vaporized, so the phenol plastic makes many bubbles inside the carbonized carbon. Because these bubbles are embedded, it is fired one time and after it is immersed in phenol plastic liquid and pressure filtrated, it is fired and carbonized again. This process is usually repeated 3-6 times and then the product is finished.
C/C is an abbreviation for CFRC which is "Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon".
